News: Metal Gear Solid 4 is out

Well finally, from what I've heard it is absolutely amazing, and has taken quite a few perfect 10s from various websites in a very GTA like fashion.

This makes it the second game to get a perfect 2 from Gamespot and IGN this year, quite an impressive accomplishment.

Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear series had stated that this would be his last Metal Gear game, but he always says that and he has recently started to say things along the lines of "Maybe I'll make another, who knows".

Well, the only thing I know is that this is the last game with Solid Snake in it ( He's an old man in this one, the man is only human! ) but this is supposedly NOT the last Metal Gear game.

This most certainly means that the next game will be called "Metal Gear Raiden". Ok maybe not, but that doesn't mean that a game of that nature wouldn't be awesome.

Which reminds me if you haven't seen the Metal Gear Awesome videos on Newgrounds then you are really missing out

Linkies!
Metal Gear Awesome 1
Metal Gear Awesome 2

Note: Both have foul language, violence, "Mild Adult Themes" and last but not least spoilers.

Well that's really all that has to be said about Metal Gear Solid 4.

And yes, I was rather hyper while typing up this post.

News: Europe Takes Silver Medal in Game Sales

Despite it's neglect from most publishers Europe shows itself to be the second largest gaming market next to Asia, with America getting 3rd.

Some people would say this is obvious, given the fact that Europe is as...most...of you know an entire continent with quite a few more people than America. However since America and Japan get pretty much all the attention, it was a bit of a shocker to some people. I hope this is a wake-up call for some of the big-boy publishers such as EA and Activision and that they realize that there are lots of Europeans out there who don't like getting Rockband ( From Harmonix ) much later and very expensive.

Anyway, I'll show some of the statistics here for you number lovers out there.

"Across Europe, 40 percent of people who play games do so for 6 to 14 hours per week. Of those who don't play games, 48 percent said it is merely because they do not have enough hours in the day. The study also found that 81 percent of parents who play games in Europe do so with their kids."
From Gamespot.com

Anyway that's really all I have to say about that! Good on ya Europe!

Game Review: 1080 Avalanche

I bought and played 1080 Avalanche quite a while ago, and I personally enjoyed it a lot. But I'm going to take into account that I'm a weird guy, and that in reality the game actually isn't that great. So, here it is

____________________________________________________________________

Game Review: 1080 Avalanche

1080 Avalanche is a Gamecube game released on December 1st 2003 and is the sequel to the rather popular Nintendo 64 game 1080 Snowboarding.

The gameplay is very racing based, unlike other snowboarding games such as the SSX series where tricks are the main attraction. The races take place on numerous stages and pit you against another computer player or human player in a race to the finish.

The races are divided up into a few different difficulties and there is a fair number of tracks for you to race on. There are also different characters with different attributes to choose from. These characters also have unlockable snowboards and outfits. Every character even has a special character with exactly the same attributes that you can unlock. All of this is fine and dandy and some people like me for instance might feel the urge to unlock every single thing present in the game, but this plethora of stuff seems to be in stark contrast to the actual length of the game.

This game is short, very short. I breezed through all the difficulties and tracks in one or two sittings. While you might think it would be remedied by all those unlockable goodies, I don't think it is because most normal people simply aren't going to be trying to get them. I just had to get that out of the way quickly, as that is surely the game's worst point.

Anyway, on to some more positive aspects of the game. The graphics are very nice for a Gamecube game and the track design has lots of nice looking scenic areas for you to snowboard around. Especially good looking is the Avalanche. There are I believe 2 avalanches that you can encounter in the game, the first one you might miss however ( I haven't been playing the game in a while so if this isn't so, sorry ) and the second one is at the end of the game. These avalanches are really exciting and are a centerpiece for the game.

The sound is arguably even better than the graphics. It has a pretty large soundtrack, filled mostly with rock and alternative songs which can really get you pumped up for a race. And you can choose which song you want to listen to while at the loading screen, which just makes it better.

The game controls well, and I didn't encounter any problems with that. The whole "Spin the joystick when you lose balance" mechanic is kind of badly made however. Basically when you land a bit off center you have to spin the stick to get back upright, and this whole sequence is in slow-motion. But the problem lies in the fact that not only are you viewing this is slow motion, your character actually is in slow motion. So if it's a close race a slightly missed landing can cost you the game ( Which, as you can guess is not very fun ).

The trick system is rather dull, which is no surprise as the game isn't centered around tricks but more around racing. You won't find much to captivate you here. The reward for pulling off enough tricks is that you can become invincible. Well, by invincible I mean that if you fall you recover instantly and if you bump into an opponent you send them flying into the air and then they will crash, which can be quite useful. You will lose your invincibility after you do either of these things though, and I found myself not really needing these powers at all as the game isn't especially difficult.

So, if you don't mind the lackluster length I think you can enjoy this game quite a lot. It will also help if you are the sort of person who likes items and unlocks and stuff like that, because if you do that will significantly increase the length.

Overall: 7.5/10

Movie Review: An Inconvenient Truth

I watched this one about....1 day ago so it is still fresh in my memory ( Unlike some of the games I review ). So, time for the review!

Movie Review: An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary presented by Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim. It is concerned with Global Warming and a bit about Al Gore`s efforts to expose the threat of Global Warming to the public. The film consists mostly of footage from Al Gore`s presentation called "The Slideshow" which he has presented in many places around the world.

In a technical sense the film seemed very good. Some good camera work and footage presents itself. Of course, as this is a documentary you will probably pay little to no attention to these aspects of the movie.

The music is very nice. It even won the "Best original song" Academy Award ( The first documentary to do so ). On this front, I really don`t have much to say. Once again, as it is a documentary this won`t matter much.

The meat of any documentary however, is what it is presenting. And in this case it is Global Warming and also some mis-conceptions surrounding it. This is a very polarizing subject, and for some people it won`t help that Al Gore is presenting it, as for some reason many people seem to be very hateful towards Al Gore. Your enjoyment of this film will be determined somewhat by your opinions on Global Warming and Al Gore. Although the movie is made very well so I would think that an open minded...skeptic would still enjoy it even with it's subject matter.

The writing is well done, although some people might be turned off by the bad jokes during the presentation pieces. But bad jokes are right at home during presentations and I don't feel that they really detract from the content of the film at all.

So, if you are a liberal, and especially if you are a member of the Green Party you will enjoy this movie very much. But if you are a skeptic you might not be so into it, but it should at least get your brain juices flowing.

Anyway, that's all I have to say!

Movie Rating ( Personal ): 5/5
Movie Rating ( Average Person ) 3.5/5

I liked this movie a lot, and hopefully it will get some skeptics to stop doubting! ( Yes, I'm a liberal ). So, if you like documentaries I encourage you to watch this movie.
